Our first stop was Pamukkale (it literally means cotton castle). It is a natural site where hot springs and travertines (limestone formations) can be found. It was absolutely beautiful and the pictures, although they are amazing, do not do it justice.

The campsite had 2 pools and our kids thoroughly enjoyed swimming every day.

The boys are totally into making muscles lately. This picture cracks me up, especially Yohanis because he is so serious about it. This boy has some guns!
The next morning we were up bright and early thanks to the call to prayer from the mosque right beside our campsite. So we thought we'd get an early start (and beat the heat) walking up the mountain to see the travertines.

These guys loved running and splashing in pool after pool! They were so excited every time they discovered another one. There were more than a dozen pools as we hiked up the mountain.
Once we got to the top we explored the ancient Greco-Roman city of Heirapolis.
The Antique Pool. Many people come to bathe in this thermal pool as it is believed the water can cure many ailments. But for 30TL (about 17 dollars) per person for a swim, we decided to settle for pictures instead :)
Got to have myself a little fish manicure! These little fish will chew off all the dead skin, such a weird feeling.

ReplyDeleteAnd those fish pedicures are huge in Ireland. Even my wee rural town had a place doing them. Oddly enough, it was next door to a fish monger's shop.
Wow - those pools are so neat. And how cool to walk through Hierapolis! I'm memorizing Colossians and at the end it mentions Hierapolis so this was neat for me to see it. I will not mentally picture these photos when I think of Colossians 4.
