The idea was hatched when we decided we needed some time out of the country this summer just to have a break from the heavy spiritual and political climate here. Things have been extra tense this past year since the coup attempt and we wanted some time as a family to relax and have some fun together. We found a retreat center in Slovakia that we wanted to stay at and after looking up the cost of flying there and renting a van (which was pretty expensive), I said to Joel: "Why don't we do a road trip there instead?!"
He was not particularly keen on my idea at first, but after seeing my excitement (and the kids' excitement), he slowly warmed up to our crazy plan. Then, to keep costs down even more, we decided to stay at campsites as we traveled. We got an awesome tent that attached to the roof of our van, I started going overboard with researching campsites, traveling the Balkans, what to see and do, and finally, on July 10th we set off on our amazing journey!
